Stephen R. Donaldson gets mixed reviews from us. His Mordantís Need series is a fun read with a unique magic system based on mirrors where reality can be controlled. It gets high marks from us.

Donaldsonís The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever series was a rough read. To put it bluntly, we hated it. We read the entire series and it got worse with each book. The series features a protagonist (Thomas Covenant) with few redeeming qualities. He is selfish, violent, abusive, and hateful. His journey makes the reader trudge through one scene after another where he becomes more unlikeable.

We would have put Stephen R. Donaldson on our list of the Worst Fantasy Authors, but he survived the banishment by writing Mordantís Need. As a result, he barely makes the good list with 2.5 stars.
