Phil Tucker’s strengths are in world and character building. His world and series plot in Chronicles of the Black Gate are epic in scope. His characters are well defined with each person having their own personality based on social status and past experience. This gives them their own motivation for the actions they take.
His writing style is filled with beautiful prose and bits of philosophy, which adds enjoyment to the reading experience.
Poor editing and an overuse of clichés serve as Phil Tucker’s weakness.
Even with the distractions caused by editing mistakes, his books are thoroughly enjoyable so we highly recommend them.
